FULLERTON — After every Thursday practice, Valley Center High School football coach Bill Dunckel tells his team to “find a way to win by one.”
That’s exactly what the Jaguars did Friday night, using five plays to go 78 yards, with Joeisha Ryan Tirado going the final 14 yards for a 36-35 win over San Jose Lincoln.
The win at Fullerton College, in a game that saw nine lead changes, gives Valley Center (9-5) the Division 6-AA state football championship.
“A one-point win is a win,” a hoarse Dunckel said as he pointed to the scoreboard. “Of course, you’d rather make it easy and win by 20, but a one-point win is a win.”
Valley Center trailed 35-29 after Lincoln drove 92 yards, scoring on a 2-yard run by Kyan Phillips with 1:47 to play. Valley Center’s Joaquin Stehly blocked the ensuing PAT, however, keeping the lead at six points.
Valley Center then went to work from its own 22-yard line. Quarterback Braylon Mitchell completed passes for 17, 10, 4 and 16 yards. The Jaguars also benefited from a 15-yard Lincoln penalty.
With the ball on the Lincoln 14 and the clock running out, the Jaguars handed the ball to Tirado, who bullied his way into the end zone for his third touchdown of the game.
“No doubt, I wanted the ball there,” Tirado said. “I was cramping the worst I’ve ever cramped in a game. I was letting my team down by not being on the field. I had to score.”
With the score tied at 35, it was up to Valley Center’s Jesse Morales to win the game with a PAT.
Following a pair of offside penalties against Lincoln, Morales drilled the game-winner.
“Our regular kicker (Bryan Penaloza) got hurt a few games ago and the coaches asked me to kick,” Morales said. “It’s not something I enjoy, but the team needed me. I wasn’t nervous until Lincoln jumped twice. So I told myself to calm down. I had to keep my cool and get the job done.”
Morales, a receiver by trade, entered the game with 85 catches for 1,361 yards and 15 TDs.
Morales didn’t have a catch in the first half. He had six for 134 yards and a finger-tip 54-yard TD strike from Mitchell in the secocnd.
“Lincoln was taking away the deep stuff in the first half, playing a lot of zone, and we just weren’t clicking. We made some adjustments at halftime to get me more involved,” Morales said.
Lincoln hit Valley Center with four big pass plays and led 16-13 at the half.
Quarterback Luca Papoulias completed passes 68, 46, 34 and 25 yards and had 199 passing yards at the break.
The 68-yarder came with 1:11 left in the half, when he found Kyan Phillips open over the middle and Phillips outran the defense to the end zone. The 34-yarder went to Michael Whitelaw and helped set up the first score of the game, a 1-yard run by Phillips which capped a 14-play, 88-yard drive. The 46-yarder went to Lucas Martinez and led to a Lincoln field goal.
Valley Center scored on two short runs by Tirado, one for 5 yards and another for 4. He had 14 carries for 113 yards at the break.
Tirado, who also plays on the defensive line, had 24 carries for 193 yards and three TDs. He also caught two passes for 25 yards.
Morales had six catches for 134 yards, giving him 91 receptions and 1,495 yards for the season.
Mitchell completed 15 of 24 passes for 307 yards, giving him 3,302 yards for the season. He had a 52-yard connection to Joaquin Stehly and 42 yards to Gauge Wright.
Tirado recovered a fumble, while Cooper Chaney and Casen Dunham both intercepted passes.
Dunham’s pick ended the game.
Papoulias completed 16 of 22 passes for 328 yards, but was intercepted twice.
Phillips had 23 carries for 109 yards and two TDs, caught four passes for 126 yards and had a 93-yard kickoff return.

FULLERTON — It couldn’t have been any closer.
Lincoln-San Jose had just gone up by six points with 1:47 to play and needed one stop to win its first state football championship in school history.
Valley Center would have none of it. The San Diego-area school got the ball back at the 22-yard line with 1:42 left and drove 78 yards in five plays and 70 seconds.
The all-important extra point, which Lincoln had missed moments earlier, gave Valley Center the 36-35 win.
Lincoln advanced the ball to its own 40-yard line, but no further. On the final play, Valley Center’s Casen Dunham intercepted the Lions’ desperation pass to seal it.
“We played well as a team,” said Lincoln senior Kyan Phillips, who scored the go-ahead touchdown late and had four scores overall. “We’ve competed all the way to the end of every game. One point away from winning this game, just like all the other games. That’s all I can say.”
Once again, Phillips spoke clearly with his play as the Lions (11-4) gave Valley Center (9-6) all it could handle. Phillips’ 2-yard rushing score with less than two minutes left joined a 1-yard run, 68-yard reception and 83-yard kickoff return among his prolific scoring outlay.
He finished his senior season with 47 total touchdowns.
“It was a fun experience,” Phillips said of playing in the state championship. “A lot of the team hasn’t done something like this, go out of town. It was just good team chemistry, team bonding. And then we came out here and competed all the way today.”
Lincoln’s loss prevented longtime coach Kevin Collins from getting his first state title in the Lions’ first appearance. Now that the Lions are postseason eligible every year after the Big Bone rivalry with San Jose was moved off Thanksgiving Day to early in the season, it’s conceivable they could be back someday soon.
But it’s far from certain.
“Unfortunately, somebody had to win it,” Collins said. “I thought we were in a pretty good position. We had started to slow them down a little bit offensively. In that second half, we did some things uncharacteristically.
“Just to be part of this whole thing and drive down to LA to do everything we did together is freaking awesome. I don’t know how many times we’re gonna get this opportunity. You look at the year, it’s a successful year. Don’t feel like it right now, but it’s a more than successful year.”
Collins praised the competitive character of his group, which he felt enabled them to stay in the game when things weren’t always going their way.
There was plenty of that to be had – for both teams. The matchup featured nine lead changes and a fourth-quarter tie.
“It’s tiring for sure,” Phillips, who battled through a knee bruise, said of playing in such a back-and-forth contest. “We had a lot of injuries and sicknesses, but everyone fought through it and played to the end.”
Phillips started to limp near the end of his kickoff return TD. Wide receiver/defensive back Michael Whitelaw suffered a lower leg injury at the end of the first half and labored for the rest of the game.
Whitelaw still managed to snag two interceptions, the latter of which came after he got hurt. Senior Lucas Martinez scored Lincoln’s other touchdown, running in a 4-yard score to give the Lions a 22-21 lead midway through the third quarter.
“We wouldn’t have come as far as we did without the character you saw,” Collins said. “We’re not the biggest, fastest, strongest team in the world. We got Kyan Phillips and a bunch of dudes that are playing ball. That’s how they are. They just want to be successful.
“Hard work pays off. This is a group of kids that didn’t win a league game in two years, and then we played in the state championship their senior year, and that was because they worked hard. They stayed with each other. They didn’t give up on each other. When we got down, we’d come back. We had all the characteristics of a winning team, which they could carry with them into life. That’s what I want them to get out of it.”

VALLEY CENTER — When friends Braylon Mitchell, Jesse Morales and Joeisha Ryan Tirado entered Valley Center High School, they vowed to find a road to a CIF football championship before they graduated.
The Jaguars won a league championship two years ago, but the path to a San Diego Section title was elusive.
A promising senior season went wildly off course, and the injury-ravaged Jaguars were 1-5 after a forfeit loss to Carlsbad and a 61-28 beatdown at Imperial the next week.
Finally healthy in Week 7, Valley Center found the right route to a title.
The Jaguars beat Escondido and Mt. Carmel, suffered a “slap-the-face” 49-7 loss to San Pasqual and then pulled off a 29-27 upset of Ramona that gave the Jaguars a share of the Palomar League championship with San Pasqual and Ramona.
“The Ramona game was the first time in a while that we saw we had a legitimate team,” said Mitchell, the team’s senior quarterback who will lead the Jaguars (8-6) 100 miles north Friday to tackle San Jose Lincoln (11-3) at Fullerton College with the State Division 6-AA championship on the line.
“We saw that when we were healthy, we had a dominant team.”
At their lowest, the Jaguars were without most 11 starters, including their left tackle and right guard. The top four quarterbacks were all out at some point, forcing the team to audition a junior-varsity wide receiver at the position.
Mitchell, who has completed 199 of 307 passes for 2,995 yards and 31 touchdowns with 11 interceptions, was the healthiest quarterback … and he had a separated left shoulder.
“I told the coaches to brace it up and let’s play,” the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Mitchell said. “But with so many guys out, they didn’t think it was worth the risk.”
Added Valley Center coach Bill Dunckel: “I hated to forfeit, just hated it. It’s not in my nature to give up, but we had no choice. We were searching for answers. We had guys playing out of position. We had to scheme for that. We had no rhythm. …
“That was definitely the low point.”
Once the Jaguars hit the playoffs, they rolled over Mira Mesa (56-29), with Mitchell throwing for 232 yards and Tirado rushing for 217.
La Jolla Country Day fell 42-35. Tirado rushed for 297 yards and four touchdowns.
In the San Diego Section Division 4 championship, the Jaguars edged Eastlake 21-14 with Mitchell throwing for 208 yards, Tirado rushing for 156 yards and Morales catching nine passes for 135 yards.
Last week in the Southern California Regional 6-AA Championship, Valley Center beat Moreno Valley Valley View 30-19. Mitchell threw for 225 yards, Tirado ran for 128 and Morales caught five passes for 121 yards.
A two-way star, Tirado has rushed 219 times for 1,362 yards and 16 TDs. On defense, he has 42 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks.
“I had a couple of fumbles early in the season and the coaches kind of lost trust in me,” Tirado said. “Then I got hurt. When I got back, I was determined to help the team. I’m kind of a seek-contact running back. I’m not shifty. I run over guys. That’s why I like playing defense because I’d rather hit guys than be hit.”
Morales has 85 catches for 1,361 yards and 15 TDs.
“Braylon and I have a special connection,” Morales said. “We can change a play, a pass route with just a nod. We’ve played together for so long that there is a natural connection.”
Morales credits this season’s success to new offensive coordinator Kris Plash, who, like Dunckel, was a star receiver in high school at Orange Glen.
“(Plash) saw the connection Braylon and I have,” Morales said. “Now, we throw it 60% of the time. He has made a huge difference.”
Valley Center, a school with an enrollment of just under 1,100, is a one-school town. The football connections run deep.
“We all play Pop Warner together,” Mitchell said. “Escondido Pop Warner is very good, but those kids scatter to a bunch of schools once they get to high school. Up here, we stick together.”
There’s also a family atmosphere within the program.
There are four Stehlys on the team — Mitch, Joaquin, Max and Jack. All are major contributors. Max and Jack are brothers. All are cousins.
“The players here love the coaching staff,” Dunckel said. “They love each other. They love football. When we were 1-5 and struggling, not one kid bitched. Not one kid wanted to give up. Sure, they were frustrated. So were the coaches.

VALLEY CENTER – Trailing by 11 points with eight minutes left before halftime, Valley Center High School scored the final 22 points of the game to defeat Moreno Valley Valley View 30-19 in Friday night’s Southern California Division 6-AA Southern California football regional championship.
Although the Jaguars trailed 19-16 at halftime, the energy remained high after Joeisha Ryan Tirado scored a 44-yard rushing touchdown and caught the two-point conversion pass from quarterback Braylon Mitchell to cut the deficit to three points.
“On offense, we marched down the field,” said Mitchell, who completed 12 of 15 passes for 225 yards with two touchdowns and two passing two-point conversions. “All year, no one has stopped our offense, and our defense has really stepped up the second half of the year.”
Valley Center, which has now won seven of its last eight games, answered first coming out of halftime. Tirado scored his second touchdown from 12 yards out and gave the Jaguars (8-6) their first lead with 6:48 left in the third quarter over the Eagles (9-6).
“You think you’re going to stop the pass, then you’ve got (Tirado),” Valley Center coach Bill Dunckel said of his senior running back, who had 16 carries for 121 yards. “Then, if you try to stop the run, you’ve got our pass game. You always want to be a balanced offense, so I think that’s what we have.”
The Jaguars’ defense then responded with its first takeaway of the night. Joaquin Stehly recorded an interception that gave Mitchell and the offense the ball at Valley View’s 37-yard line.
“The game kind of swung our way,” Dunckel said. “Once we knew we could stop them, it was a great game.”
Mitchell then turned that interception into points as he found Gauge Wright for a 15-yard touchdown on a back shoulder pass to extend the lead.
“Ever since we’ve been playing 7-on-7 with each other, we’ve told each other, ‘Short-term memory,’ ” Mitchell said of Wright, who coughed up a fumble 66 seconds into the second half. “I throw a pick, I fumble, someone fumbles, short-term memory. Forget about it. Make a play and that’s what he did.”
Valley View, which won the Southern Section Division 11 title in dramatic fashion last week, tried to pull off more magic, but was unable to get down the field.
Eagles quarterback Jesse Vega, who completed 17 of 26 passes for 159 yards and three touchdowns, left the game with six minutes left after taking a big hit by Jaguars linebacker Max Stehly.
Although Valley View got into Jaguars territory, Valley Center’s Cooper Chaney secured the game-sealing interception with 1:41 left in the fourth quarter.
Valley Center will face Northern California champion San Jose Lincoln, which beat Gridley 28-23 on Friday. Kickoff for the 6-AA state championship game will be announced Sunday and will take place at either Buena Park High School, Fullerton Union High School or Saddleback College.
