CARLSBAD, CA — Dozens of San Diego area students — including 13 in Carlsbad — were named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced this week.
The students are among more than 16,000 semifinalists in the running to be named a National Merit Scholar, and receive a $2,500 scholarship to help them further their education. Roughly 6,870 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $26 million will be awarded next spring, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
To become a finalist, semifinalists must submit a detailed scholarship application that provides information about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. They must also be recommended by a high school official, receive SAT or ACT scores high enough to qualify, and write an essay.
About 95% of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists are expected to win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title in the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Winners will be announced between April and July 2025.

Infielder Thomas Saggese, a top prospect in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system, was called up on Tuesday to make his Major League Baseball debut.
Saggese, a 2020 Carlsbad High graduate, was a fifth round selection by the Texas Rangers and signed with the club for $800,000. The Rangers traded Saggese to the Cardinals at the trade deadline in 2023.
“I knew if I were to get drafted, I just want to have a good amount of money invested in me and I got pretty close to my number (from the Rangers)," Saggese told SBLive shortly after being drafted in 2020. “It happens once in a lifetime and I couldn’t pass it up.”
After playing his first two high school seasons at Rancho Bernardo High, Saggese transferred to Carlsbad as a junior. He had a breakout season, hitting .422 with a .500 on-base percentage. He had five doubles, three triples and tied for the San Diego Section lead with 10 home runs. Following the season, Saggese played in the San Diego Section All-Star game alongside Marcelo Mayer and Spencer Jones, who are currently among the top prospects in the minor leagues.
“As a junior, I just ran into a couple balls and got them into the air for whatever reason," Saggese said in 2020. “When I was 15, I was a good hitter, but it was more just line drives.
As a senior, Saggese picked right back up by hitting .440 with three home runs, three triples and a double in seven games for the Lancers before the COVID-19 pandemic ended the season after just seven games. Saggese had signed to play at Pepperdine following high school but as his status rose later in his high school career, the professional route became an immediate option.
Saggese was hitting .253 with 23 doubles, 20 home runs and nine stolen bases this season for the AAA Memphis Redbirds. He'll bat seventh and play shortstop for the Cardinals in his debut on Tuesday night.

The bakery chain celebrated the grand opening of its newest location Aug. 24 at the outdoor shopping center.
"We are thrilled to open our newest location at The Forum Carlsbad, a vibrant hub for shopping, dining, and community gatherings throughout the year," SusieCakes CEO and founder Susan Sarich said in a statement. "This location is a perfect fit for our bakery, and I'm excited to bring our delicious custom cakes, cupcakes and other treats to this beautiful space. We love the Carlsbad community and are eager to provide our loyal guests with the convenience of picking up their favorite treats while enjoying all that The Forum Carlsbad has to offer."
SusieCakes offers an array of classic American desserts. From old-fashioned layer cakes to cupcakes, cookies and pies, every treat is made on-site and from scratch, according to the company.
Founded in 2006 in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, SusieCakes has expanded across Southern California, with locations in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and Ventura counties, as well as throughout Northern California in the San Francisco Bay Area. CARLSBAD, CA — The American Red Cross has declared an emergency blood shortage as extreme heat and end-of-summer travel plans threaten already low blood levels.
The Red Cross national blood supply has fallen by more than 25% since July 1, according to the organization, which supplies about 40% of the country's blood.
Heat affected almost 100 blood drives last month in nearly every state where the Red Cross collects donations. Summer travel and related activities were also a factor in the shortfall of more than 17,000 blood donations in July, according to the Red Cross.
Carlsbad residents can help. Donors of all blood types are needed, especially type O blood donors, according to the Red Cross.
"It's critical hospitals have both type O positive and O negative blood ready to go for patients in the most life-threatening situations," said Dr. Eric Gehrie, executive physician director for the Red Cross. "Type O is especially important for victims of accidents and other trauma who are receiving emergency treatment. Now is the time for donors of all blood types to give and ensure hospital shelves can be restocked before any impact to patient care."
The Red Cross has planned blood drives across San Diego County, including in Carlsbad. Donors who give blood, platelets or plasma through Aug. 31 will receive a $20 Amazon.com gift card by email.
