Have you ever been to a primary care doctor and wondered why they focus on treating symptoms instead of addressing the root cause of your illness? Rather than take a patient-centered approach to address questions like, “Why are you ill?” they prescribe medications that alleviate symptoms but don’t do much to solve the underlying issue that’s causing you to be sick.
When you have a runny nose, you’re handed an antihistamine. When you have high cholesterol or high blood pressure, you’re prescribed a pill that treats the number. The truth is that this approach only tackles your symptoms. When the root cause isn’t fixed, your symptoms can get exponentially worse. Remember - your body’s dysfunction isn’t due to your meds not working.
This begs the question: Wouldn't you rather address the underlying cause of your health concerns so you can experience long-term relief? As a naturopathic doctor in Boulevard, CA, Dr. Erica Oberg takes a functional approach to medicine and well-being instead of treating the symptoms her patients endure.

As people get older, many things change in life. Often, those changes are good, like having more self-control, financial freedom, and patience. Others are hard to deal with, especially when they're out of our control. Like all things in life, our hormones change when we get older. These fluctuations can cause problems for both men and women, including:
If those symptoms sound familiar, you're not alone. A 2019 American Psychological Association survey found that almost half of women aged 30 to 60 in the US have experienced symptoms of a hormonal imbalance. Of course, as men age, they suffer from imbalanced hormones, too. Research from BodyLogicMD states that nearly 38% of males in America aged 45 and older have a testosterone deficiency.
The good news is that balancing your hormones and addressing the root cause of your symptoms doesn’t have to be hard. It’s a realistic goal with Dr. Oberg by your side. As a functional medicine doctor in Boulevard, CA, she can help your body metabolize and detoxify both your own hormones and the endocrine-disrupting chemicals infiltrating your life. When your hormones are in harmony, you experience improved energy, mood, and overall health – and that’s something to be excited about.
Our comprehensive Three-Month Hormone Balancing Program is designed to empower you with the knowledge and tools to take control of your hormonal health. This is no "one-and-done service" - it's a holistic journey that spans three transformative months, offering the support and guidance to become confident, capable, and healthier than ever. Features of our hormone balancing program include:
You will receive support throughout your journey from Dr. Oberg, who will provide healthcare services, and our health coaches, who offers personalized coaching tailored to your specific needs.
Nutrition has a significant impact on hormonal health. A customized hormone-balancing diet plan will be provided to help nourish the body optimally based on individual goals.
We provide a range of practical strategies and tips for regulating hormone balance through your nervous system. These techniques aim to empower you to take control of your well-being.
When appropriate, we’ll prescribe you hormone replacement therapy (HRT), testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), or growth hormone peptide therapy to help balance your hormones.
At our functional medical office, we make it a point to correct the root causes of our patient's problems. We don't treat symptoms - but we do use them to figure out the underlying issues you're facing. If you notice any of the following symptoms, it could be time to consider HRT.
When you mention hormone replacement therapy, most people think the treatment is exclusively for females going through menopause. While that's partially true - HRT can relieve night sweats, hot flashes, and other menopause-related problems - men also deal with imbalanced hormones.
Testosterone plays a crucial role in male sexual health. Low levels can result in decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and other sexual performance issues. Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection may be a sign of imbalanced hormones or low testosterone levels.
When your sleep patterns change - like when you have trouble falling or staying asleep - it could be a sign of a hormone imbalance. Testosterone is involved in regulating the sleep cycle, and insufficient levels of it can disrupt quality rest.
Imbalances in hormones can affect mental health and mood. If a man shows signs of irritability, mood swings, or depression, it could indicate low testosterone or other hormonal issues. Hormone replacement therapy can help regulate mood by balancing your hormone levels.
Menopause happens when a woman has not had a menstrual cycle for at least 12 consecutive months. It is a result of declining sex hormone levels, causing the ovaries to stop releasing egg cells. During menopause, women face a range of challenges.
Testosterone plays a crucial role in male sexual health. Low levels can result in decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and other sexual performance issues. Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection may be a sign of imbalanced hormones or low testosterone levels.
Irregular menstrual cycles are a common sign that women are nearing menopause, and their hormone levels may be shifting. The frequency of their periods may increase or decrease, and the amount of bleeding could be more or less than usual, while also lasting for a shorter or longer time.
Hot flashes are perhaps the most well-known symptom of menopause and a frequent sign that a woman's hormones are imbalanced. Hot flashes are sudden feelings of warmth and sweating that are usually most intense on your face, neck, and chest.
Don't let hormone imbalances dictate your life. Take the first step towards reclaiming your balance, energy, and vitality. By working together with Dr. Oberg and her team, you can unlock the path to a healthier, more harmonious you.

IV therapy is considered one of the best ways to get the nutrients and immune-boosting goodness your body needs because it gives you a more direct, efficient means of delivery. Unlike oral supplement, which often falls short due to digestive limitations, IV therapy ensures swift and comprehensive nutrient absorption. Some of the biggest benefits of IV therapy from a functional medicine doctor in Boulevard, CA include the following:
IV fluids and electrolytes rapidly hydrate your body, providing an efficient remedy for dehydration resulting from illness, physical activity, or excessive alcohol intake.
IV treatment is able to increase energy and fight tiredness, which can make you feel re-energized.
IV infusions containing immune-enhancing vitamins and antioxidants can fortify your immune system and assist in recovering from illness.
IV therapy containing growth factors, exosomes, and vitamins is effective in improving the health and appearance of the skin and hair. These components complement hair and facial microneedling treatments exceptionally well.
IV therapy can help reduce the symptoms of toxic exposure, like headaches, nausea, fatigue, and dehydration, whether it's from a basic hangover or prolonged exposure to molds, heavy metals, or other toxins.
Dr. Oberg’s personalized IV infusions can serve as an initial boost for making lifestyle changes and play a role in a sustained plan to control persistent conditions like diabetes, autoimmune disorders, cancer, heart disease, and others.
Support Mitochondria function and Anti-aging
Dr. Oberg offers carefully sourced and research backed regenerative therapies such as exosome and stem cell infusions. These can be powerful options for people recovering from chronic infections such as long COVID or Epstein Barr or Lyme. They are also powerful for neuro-regeneration and we frequently use them in stroke recovery and for traumatic brain injury.
Dr. Oberg offers personalized IV micronutrient therapy tailored to address specific nutritional deficiencies, hydration needs, and overall health. This therapy is based on advanced testing that evaluates your cells' nutrient levels. Whether you need more energy, a stronger immune system, or relief from different health issues, IV drip therapy can be customized to help you rediscover the very best version of yourself.
As we get older, our bodies experience a range of changes that affect our health and appearance. These changes are primarily caused by issues with mitochondria and cellular aging. However, there have been significant developments in regenerative medicine, offering the potential to turn back the hands of time and improve health. Schedule a consultation today with Dr. Oberg to begin your journey with regenerative medicine.
Regenerative medicine is an exciting, innovative field that centers on activating your body's innate regenerative abilities to repair and revitalize tissues, cells, and organs. Its focus is on improving your body's natural healing processes to counteract the impacts of aging and different health issues. If you find that old, nagging injuries won’t go away or that fine lines and wrinkles have become overwhelming, anti-aging medicine from a functional medicine doctor in Boulevard, CA may be perfect for you.
At our naturopathic medical office, we use treatments like IV therapy, hormone replacement therapy, and Peptide Therapy to manage a broad array of health and aesthetic concerns. These treatments can aid in tissue repair, inflammation reduction, and enhancement of cellular function.
Anti-aging services offered at our functional medicine clinic include the following:
Peptides are fundamental components of proteins and play a crucial role in various biological processes, such as the aging process. Dr. Oberg offers peptide treatments to help counteract age-related decline, enhance muscle growth and performance, improve skin health, and more.
When you bring your hormones back into balance, you can fight back against issues such as fatigue, mood swings, reduced libido, and even erectile dysfunction.
Replenish vital nutrients, antioxidants, and hydration for improved energy levels, skin health, and immune support.
Exosomes are tiny vesicles generated from mesenchymal stem cells. These vesicles serve as powerful communicators, transmitting signals to various tissues in the body. Their main function is to trigger healing, regeneration, and repair processes, mimicking the actions of younger cells. They are considered to be one of the most effective strategies for combating the aging process.
When nutrition guidance, lifestyle adaptations, and powerful supplements are combined with naturopathic medical therapies from Dr. Oberg, you can reverse chronic diseases in your life and reach your anti-aging goals.
Our goal with regenerative medicine treatments is to rejuvenate deteriorating or aging tissue. Our approach to treatment centers on fixing and reversing damage instead of solely addressing symptoms like pain. Regenerative medicine harnesses the power of healthy cells to renew and restore function by enhancing the body's innate capacity for self-healing.

Following an all-night battle, firefighters announced forward progress had been stopped and most evacuation orders were lifted Thursday on the Thorn fire that began a day earlier near Boulevard.
The spread was halted at around 1,234 acres. By Friday morning, crews reported having 65% containment.
The fire started about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday near Buckthorn Trail and Old Highway 80, crossing Interstate 8 and burning east. Its forward progress was halted just west of McCain Valley Road, officials said.
For several hours Wednesday, the fire forced the closure of I-8 between Crestwood and Ribbonwood roads, with traffic being diverted to state Route 94.
Around 2 p.m. Friday, the California Highway Patrol reported on X that all lanes have been reopened.
About 600 firefighters were on the fire Thursday, with crews dousing hot spots and building containment lines. Firefighters were assisted by eight aircraft, including three air tankers and four helicopters, said Cal Fire Capt. Oscar Sotelo.
Firefighters made good progress overnight Wednesday, as winds diminished and temperatures cooled. Things appeared tricky for firefighters momentarily Thursday. Sotelo said strong winds and a thunderstorm cell created a potential problem. But crews were still able to gain the upper hand, and the thunderstorm passed.
“What thunderstorms do is create a kind of safety issue with firefighters on the ground if there’s a potential for lightning,” Sotelo said. “There were some lightning strikes nearby, but everybody is OK.”
The fire damaged at least one structure, but it was not destroyed, Sotelo said. It was not immediately clear what type of structure it was. Inspection teams were scouting the area Thursday, Sotelo said.
Sotelo said fire officials expect the fire to burn for several more days. “We will keep plugging away on the containment line,” he said.
Evacuation orders remained in place Thursday evening for areas closest to the fire’s ignition point and in the areas near its perimeter, particularly around Ribbonwood Road, according to Genasys Protect’s online mapping.
Sotelo said residents who are still evacuated need to stay away until the danger passes, and SDG&E crews determine the fire hasn’t affected power lines.
“The biggest thing is just safety,” he said. “We hate to tell them they can go back in while there are still hot spots.”

The massive Sunset Strip trunk line rupture was L.A.’s worst in years, spilling 17 million gallons of water and forcing the closure of Sunset Boulevard for at least several days.
Closures are in place on Sunset Boulevard from San Vicente Boulevard/N. Clark Street to Horn Avenue, where the 110-year-old pipe burst unleashing a torrent of water and leaving a massive sinkhole. Larrabee Street at Santa Monica Boulevard and Palm Avenue at Santa Monica Boulevard are also closed, according to the city of West Hollywood.
Soft closures, open only to residents, are in place at Shoreham Drive at Sunset Boulevard, Holloway Drive between Palm and Hancock avenues and San Vicente Boulevard at Cynthia Street.
The closures are poised to be a significant disruption to businesses and residents along the typically bustling section of West Hollywood. The bulk of the damage is located just blocks away from Whisky A Go Go, the famed club where many legendary rock bands got their start. Officials are asking motorists to avoid the area over the next several days so Los Angeles Department of Water and Power repair crews can work.
The streets surrounding the Sunset Strip were quiet early Friday aside from the hum of idling utility vehicles. An employee at a liquor store on Sunset told The Times she’d only had two customers so far that day when typically she’d see at least 40.
But the trunk line rupture didn’t upend everyone’s day. A Hollywood tour bus managed to navigate through the web of street closures to usher tourists around the world-famous destination.
By Friday morning crews had already pumped water out of the sinkhole where the section of damaged pipe is located. Crews will remove a conduit for traffic signals to gain access to the 25-foot section of pipeline that needs to be replaced. It will take DWP about 16 hours to weld the new steel pipe onto the existing trunk line, said Anselmo Collins, DWP’s chief operating officer and senior assistant general manager.
Officials estimate that the stretch of Sunset Boulevard could be reopened by Monday.
“I don’t want to guarantee that we’re going to have it open by Monday, but we’re going to do everything possible to get it open as quickly as we can,” Collins said. “We recognize the significant impact to the West Hollywood community as well as all the people that are using Sunset Boulevard to get to and from work, so our goal is to do this as quick as we can.”
While West Hollywood has dealt with other water main breaks over the years, this one happened at the top of a hill, sending water down into businesses and homes, and causing more damage to residential properties, Mayor John Heilman said.
Water inundated a handful of residential units, including a few where electricity had to be shut off because their electrical panels were compromised. Most of the damage was centered in subterranean garages where water had to be pumped out.
Heilman estimated that between 150 and 200 cars were damaged or destroyed in the flood. Officials are going door to door to tell residents how they can file claims with DWP to pay for water damage.
“Our residents are amazing. They were out yesterday morning checking on each other. They are pretty resilient,” Heilman said.
Officials said anyone with property or vehicle damage can file a claim through LADWP at ladwp.com/claims.
LADWP claims staff will be available to assist Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 1010 Palm Ave. They’ll be able to answer any questions about property damage and claims.
Standing in a garage full of mud and wrecked cars on Friday, Joe Artle, who manages an apartment building on Palm Avenue and Cynthia Street, stared bewildered into the distance trying to figure out what to do next.
Artle, 70, was trying to sleep when his neighbor and friend, Rudy Vargas, came banging on his door at around 3 a.m. Thursday, panicked, urging him to get his car out of the underground garage because of the flooding.
He rushed out of the apartment and started trying to wake his neighbors. They were only able to save maybe four of the 20 cars in the garage, Artle said.
“The water was so intense,” he said. “It was like whitewater rapids, like when you’re river rafting. You couldn’t stand in it; it would knock you over.”
Artle said the broken pipe unleashed the worst damage he’s seen in the 25 years he’s lived in the building. Most of its 35 tenants lost vehicles or belongings stored in the garage. The building’s washer and dryer units were also destroyed in the deluge.
Vargas, 40, said his adrenaline was so high that he wasn’t completely processing the situation as it was happening. When he navigated his way outside it was akin to crossing a river, he said. He had to grip onto street poles just to keep himself up.
“Sometimes, it rains hard enough that water comes into here, and it floods the garage, but it hasn’t been that bad, so when I came out to the kitchen window to see, and I saw it was really bad, that’s when I’m like, ‘panic mode,’” said Vargas, who has lived in the building for about 13 years.
The break, which happened before dawn on Thursday, was on a riveted steel pipe from 1916 that forms the major arteries for water delivery from reservoirs and tanks to smaller distribution mainlines across Los Angeles.
The section of the Sunset trunk line was slated to be replaced in 2031 as part of a larger project that includes replacing 6.4 miles of trunk line, 3.5 miles of 12-inch distribution pipe and a pressure regulating station. That project is expected to take about four years, Collins said.
There are about 547 miles of trunk line underground across the city. In 2019, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said roughly 29% of the city’s pipes were over 80 years old, approaching their typical lifespan of 100 years.
For many, the break was reminiscent of another trunk line rupture on Sunset Boulevard in 2014. That break also sent more than 10 million gallons of water onto the UCLA campus, flooding several buildings and causing several million dollars in damage.
Utilities have been working to keep the aging water system going, but have struggled with limited funds, long project duration and the overwhelming amount of pipeline that needs to be replaced.
“We have, in the water system, a capital improvement budget that is over a billion dollars,” Collins said. “At any given moment, we could have six or seven different projects that are in construction simultaneously.”
The utility prioritizes trunk line replacement projects based on a variety of factors including the age of the line, the leak history and the consequences of failure in a particular area.
Despite the spectacle of Thursday’s massive deluge, Collins said DWP’s leak rate remains 36% lower than the national average with 16.1 leaks per 100 miles compared to 25 leaks per 100 miles nationwide.
He added that DWP tries to do as many projects as possible without “affecting traffic in all areas of the city at the same time.”

BOULEVARD, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Firefighters battling the Thorn Fire in southeastern San Diego County made progress overnight, stopping the fire’s forward rate of spread as crews continue working to increase containment amid another day of extreme heat.
The wildfire broke out near the Buckthorn Trail in the Campo community around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, prompting evacuation orders and the closure of a stretch of Interstate 8 in both directions, according to Cal Fire.
Fueled by strong winds, the Thorn Fire spread at a moderate-to-dangerous rate.
At around 5:15 p.m., the fire had reportedly grown to 236 acres and jumped across I-8. By 6:22 p.m., it more than doubled in size, growing to 593 acres, according to Cal Fire. Around 10 minutes later, the fire had ballooned to 699 acres.
“The fire did start on the south side of I-8, in the community of Live Oak Springs,” Cal Fire Captain and PIO Oscar Sotelo told FOX 5/KUSI. “It did push to the northeast and across I-8, which caused the interstate to be closed, both east and westbound lanes, between Ribbonwood and Crestwood.”
On Friday, around 1:56 p.m., CHP confirmed that all lanes of the I-8 affected by the fire had reopened. Crews advise motorists to drive safely in the area as firefighter equipment is transported.
As of Thursday morning, Cal Fire officials reported the fire had grown to 1,201 acres and was 10% contained — again, with the forward rate of spread stopped.
Evacuation orders and warnings have been issued for nearby areas, as seen in the map below:
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday evening that evacuation orders and warnings had been lifted for all areas except for those immediately around the fire perimeter.
The temporary evacuation shelter operated by the American Red Cross at the Golden Acorn Casino is now closed.
Air tankers made continuous drops on the flames Wednesday. Meanwhile, the temperature in the area reportedly dropped significantly during the afternoon due to the thick blanket of smoke.
A smoke advisory was issued in Southeastern San Diego County, in the areas of Live Oak Springs, Boulevard, Tierra Del Sol and McCain Valley. Winds are expected to continue blowing towards the east and south through Wednesday evening.
“The winds were pushing the fire to the east, and it did cause the fire to grow significantly,” Sotelo confirmed.
Cal Fire Capt. Oscar Sotelo said Thursday firefighters took advantage of cooler overnight conditions by deploying three firefighting helicopters that conducted water drops under the cover of darkness.
Additionally, an overnight intelligence flight equipped with infrared technology mapped the fire, allowing crews to obtain a more accurate estimate of its size.
With the forward rate of spread stopped, Capt. Sotelo says the focus is now on strengthening containment lines.
Despite the overnight progress, firefighters are preparing for difficult conditions Thursday as an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect across parts of the region. Capt. Sotelo said crews are also monitoring the potential for localized winds that could challenge containment efforts.
Fire officials said residents may continue to see smoke and occasional flare-ups within the fire area. However, crews are hoping those flare-ups remain well inside the established perimeter and do not threaten containment lines.
No injuries have been reported in connection with the fire, officials said. Damage assessment teams are expected to survey the burn area Thursday to determine how many structures may have been damaged or destroyed.
Cal Fire officials also expressed hope that evacuation orders and warnings could begin to be reduced later Thursday as containment improves. Capt. Sotelo thanked residents who followed evacuation orders, saying their cooperation has helped firefighters safely carry out suppression efforts.
On Thursday night, the American Red Cross announced that in coordination with emergency management partners, the shelter at Golden Acorn Casino is now closed. The organization thanks its team and first responders for helping those impacted by the fire.
Anyone in need of further assistance can call 1-800-RED CROSS.
The cause of the Thorn Fire remains under investigation.
This is a developing story; please check back for updates.
